You would walk past the fields themselves. Nothing special to see. Just a piece of ploughed plot with hills and here and there a pole that protrudes above the ground. Yet this research field at Salt Farm Texel cost around 2 million euros. That special is not in the composition of the earth, but in the ingenious irrigation system that ensures a very precise salinisation of the soil with salt and fresh water. "Because each part of the field contains a different salt percentage, we can see what that salt content does for a crop," says Marc van Rijsselberghe. "This way we see exactly which crops thrive on which soil."
