The Cruquius medal is an award in which the municipality of Haarlemmermeer annually honors trendsetters of the circular economy. This is one of the initiatives of the municipality to speed up the transition to a sustainable society. The medal was awarded by an independent jury, during the annual 1852 lecture.

According to the jury report, the Cruquius Medal symbolizes "the respect and appreciation for special pioneering qualities, entrepreneurship and the innovative strength"

The jury of the Cruquius Medal points out: saline farming also contributes to reducing CO2 emissions from peatlands. And that is a growing problem in the Netherlands, which arises due to lowering the peatland for agricultural purposes. According to the jury report: "Marc van Rijsselberghe shows us that there are plant varieties and ways of agriculture that do not require a reduction in the groundwater level and fresh water."
