Dit onderzoeksproject heeft geleid tot de ontdekking dat specifieke vari\u00ebteiten van bijvoorbeeld aardappelen, wortelen, rode uien, witte kool en broccoli goed gedijen op zoute grond, mits ze op een specifieke manier worden geteeld, ge\u00efrrigeerd en bemest. Dit is echt een innovatie, aangezien voedselproductie op verzilte grond altijd als onmogelijk werd beschouwd. Met deze ontdekte methoden en het gebruik van specifieke gewassen worden enorme gebieden verzilte grond wereldwijd beschikbaar voor voedselteelt: een belangrijke doorbraak in voedselzekerheid.<\/p>\n<p>De Nederlandse Minister van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit Carola Schouten: &#8220;Wereldwijd wordt ongeveer een miljard hectare landbouwgrond als onbruikbaar beschouwd door verzilting. Met de kennis die we nu hebben over teeltmethoden en het selecteren van zouttolerante gewassen, kan deze landbouwgrond worden gebruikt om voedsel te produceren. Veel landen hebben deze kennis gewoon nodig om te kunnen produceren. Daarom ondersteunen we de oprichting van een instituut dat ervoor zorgt dat deze kennis wereldwijd wordt gedeeld.
